Family Tradition

We are a Free People, free to choose our Life's Work within the bounds of good Citizenship and American Family Values. The combination of our Natural Talent and training through persistent practice permit each of us to excel in our own Career Field. Families foster an environment that supports the search for and the development of our Career Field.

Background

Many Cultures force young people into fields chosen by either the Family or the Public Education System. Very often this results in placing "a square peg in a round hole". The selection of one's life's work is usually a long and difficult process fraught with frustration. An environment that discourages career changes keeps people "stuck" in an unsatisfactory living circumstance. An environment that allows for career changes while preserving our self-sufficiency (see Integrity) permits individuals to search for their Life's Work, and with luck and hard work, find a Career where they can thrive. Generally, people are more likely to excel if their personality and training are synchronized with the Career Field.

When we speak of a Career we are normally referring to a field of work requiring training and progressive advancement. Generally, minimum wage jobs are those that do not require specialized skills achieved through significant training and/or experience and are therefore not career jobs. We must each execute the initiative and hard work to gain the skills and experience to better ourselves in life. No one owes us a living or a career. 

One must first understand the definitions of the words Career and Profession. From Websters1:

Career: 1: a field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life <Washington's career as a soldier>
2: a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling <a career in medicine> <a career diplomat>.

Profession: 1 a calling requiring specialized knowledge and often long and intensive academic preparation b : a principal calling, vocation, or employment c : the whole body of persons engaged in a calling

Professional vs. Vocational vs. Unskilled

Within these categories one finds jobs ranging from unskilled to vocational to professional. The difference is in the training, experience and certifications one achieves in a particular category. Generally Vocational jobs require 2 years or less in advanced education beyond High School to excel. Professional Jobs require at a minimum a 4-year college degree. Many require much more than a 4-year college degree. Professions have a set of ethics and best practices associated with them that ensures the actions of the Professional conform to the technical or ethical standards of the Profession. There are State Certifications of achievement and knowledge associated with both Vocational and Professional jobs. 

Looking at the area of Trades as an example we can start at the lowest level where an individual has no experience and requires significant supervision and direction. These common labor jobs are most often minimum wage and are called unskilled jobs. An individual who is serious about Trade Work and wants to better himself usually progresses from a common labor job to an apprenticeship where for a period of about 4 years the individual works under the mentorship of a Journeyman Tradesman. Frequently motivated individuals will also attend classes at a Trade School to gain special knowledge and skills related to the chosen Trade. 

Those who do not choose to better themselves are doomed to being unskilled for life and have no one to blame but themselves. We are speaking here of individuals who are capable but make bad choices in their lives. It is not society's responsibility to take care of these people. There are of course some individuals who through disabilities or birth are incapable of moving beyond unskilled. In this case the amount of resources made available by society to help these people requires Federal Government, State Government and Charities to evaluate the level of support. If an individual is persistent, hard-working and good at his job, he may become a Journeyman in his Trade. Many Trades recognize Journeyman achievement by licensing the individuals by a State Board that certifies their experience and allows them to do business in their Trade in a particular State. There are also requirements for contractor certification to ensure all trade work has the oversight of certified individuals. In the end, we are talking about craftmanship!

Gaining Journeyman status, Contractor Status and a Business License allows Tradesman Entrepreneurs to form their own Companies and go into business for themselves. Additionally, there are 4 and 5-year college degree programs in the supervision of building trades and also in architectural engineering which are both in the Professional Category.

Personality and Careers

Early in life we are exposed to Guidance Counselors in school who help us make our initial career choices as we move through High School. Our natural talent and personalities give us an aptitude for particular fields. There are a number of Career Assessments that have been developed over the years to determine for which career fields individuals appear to be best suited.  

Danger: The Media Today

It is interesting to note that the Journalism Profession appears to be one comprised of many unprofessional individuals. There are many who report in a very parochial manner with incomplete research and preconceived notions and conclusions. The result is the presentation of editorial comments and opinions disguised as professional reporting.

Couple agenda-driven reporting with Media Outlets also conducting Polls and you can have trouble! Media Companies can produce reports that lack Journalistic professionalism and merely make a point related to an agenda or a particular political view and present it as Professional Reporting. Polls can be taken to test the population to determine if the point of view has been taken by the population. If it has...good! If it hasn't, find more evidence and present it as objective and complete reporting and poll again!

Communication between Customer and Supplier is important to ensure a quality product. Checks and balances provided by a Free Press help to ensure our Political Leaders are performing for us. Because particular careers generally draw individuals with certain talents and personalities; the preponderance of individuals in a career field may think very much alike. What kind of people become Journalists? Are they practical or more like pure Idealists? Are they more the doer or the critic? The tendency for "civilized" Nations to experience creeping socialism could be related to the personalities drawn to the Media and the resulting effect on the population because of their reporting and message.

The United States of America is looking for a few good Journalists!
