Brief History On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key was so overcome by pride and emotion at the sight of Old Glory still flying over Fort McHenry after an intensive British bombardment that he scrawled on the back of an envelope what was to become our National Anthem. The words were first published in The Baltimore Patriot on September 20, 1814. Our National Anthem Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, And where is that band who so vauntingly swore Oh!
